Chapter Forteen: The Unexpected Demise of a Person Sinister
"James Dalton?" the Sinister Agent by the name of Amelia Corness called out in the darkness. "Are you still there? Is there something terrible happening?"
"She's gone, Amelia. She's gone. Just like everyone else."
The sound of the voice was in complete defeat. It was pitiful to hear.
"What?" said Amelia, sounding very surprised. "What happened? I thought they were willing to make exceptions for Clara? Did the Speaker betray you?"
"No, Amelia. But I was betrayed, indeed."
"If not the Speakership, then who? Who is the traitor?" Amelia's voice was now trembling with fear. "Who is this sinister enemy that we needed to fight?"
"This is a futile attempt, Amelia. There is nothing that we can do to reverse the circumstances. These murderers are more powerful than us. I do not want you to die, too. Do not get involved in all of my troubles, please."
"Is it... a Playwright? Tell me!"
"Amelia..."
"Just answer the question, James! What kind of Agreement are you pursuing this time?"
The Sinister Agent James Dalton emerged from the darkness with swollen eyes and a lot of tears. He was a complete emotional wreck, his presence was overflowing with extreme anxiety.
"He betrayed me. I couldn't help it."
"Who is this Playwright, then? Speak!"
"I did what he want me to do, to retrieve those silver bullets. I obliged as to what we have agreed to, but he was able to trick me. The Agreement was never consummated. There was no impossible bond, Amelia. I was a fool!"
"But, how can that be? The Agreement is the law itself."
"The Playwright I was dealing with was a hoax."
"Hoax...?" Amelia repeated. "Who is this person, then?"
James was able to compose himself. He took deep breaths, trying to recover his senses, and afterwards looked Amelia straight in the eye.
"An evil angel," he finally said.
