Chapter Fifteen: A Pragmatist's Treasure
"I know where the last one is buried. I know exactly where it is, Dark Prince. Please spare my life. I can take you there right now!" the voice pleaded with mercy.
There was a sinister laugh. This Pragmatist simply doesn't get it.
"Quiet, I said!" Lucifer shouted with an insulting tone. "I am too tired of your incompetence. Now, where is that Sinister Agent that I told you needed to be killed? Ran away? Magically vanished again?"
The Pragmatist shook his head vigorously to say no.
"I am telling you the truth. He simply vanished as I was about to use my Crystal Staff to fatally injure him. It seems like he was protected by an enchantment made by a real Magical Twig."
"A real Magical Twig? This is quite interesting," Lucifer stated. "Did the Institutes of Antonym have something to do with this sudden discovery of yours when they declared the passage of the Free Markets Act a long, long time ago?"
The Pragmatist nodded his complete assent to this statement.
"Yes. Yes it is. You, yourself, Dark Prince, are fully aware of the contained power of the Crystal Staff as opposed to the silly Twigs of the Idealists. It is well within your interests about the effectiveness of what has happened so far in time. I have nothing else to confess other than what is already transpiring."
"Nothing else to confess?" Lucifer laughed at the callous suggestion. "Convince me why this is so. I dare you to do it."
"What more do you want to know from me, great Prince?" the Pragmatist looked at him straight in the eye. "You have my unobstructed loyalty."
"Unobstructed?!" the Dark Prince said with sarcasm. "A funny way to use an adjective to modify the word 'loyalty.' So, now, tell me. How did it become possible then?"
The Pragmatist was caught in surprise by this probing question.
"How is it possible?" he repeated the inquiry in a terrified voice. "What do you mean, Dark Prince? Surely, you do not doubt the value of my solemn devotion to your causes?"
Lucifer knew everything that was happening, and he was just playing along. There are only a few more confirmation that he needed to do to validate this shameless treachery, and he cannot contain his annoyance at this point anymore. Everything turned from a simple conversation into uncontrollable anger real quick.
"Yes, my dear loyal servant. I was just about to say that. So how could a Magical Twig have made the enchantment, you say?"
A complete shock then immediately followed. The air was quite tense. The Pragmatist remained standing still.
"The Magical Twig, Dark Prince? I - I do not know exactly what you are saying."
Lucifer grinned menacingly. It is time to initiate for the kill.
"You are the one who suggested the Magical Twig from the very beginning, didn't you?"
The Pragmatist now realized that he was already cornered, and then refused to say a word any further. He has now accepted his fate. It is time to rest.
"Because you have that Magical Twig all this time, right?" Lucifer said.
A few seconds ensued and the Pragmatist immediately dropped to the ground, dead. The orb has done its job.
